Stand-Out Features
This isn’t a new gun, and that’s the point. The CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical is a refined version of a classic design. The big features are the all-steel frame and slide for durability and recoil management, and the decocker mechanism. Unlike a safety, the decocker safely lowers the hammer from the single-action position to the double-action position, so you can carry it ready to fire with a long, heavy first pull. It’s a system trusted by many law enforcement agencies worldwide. The front and backstrap are aggressively checkered, and the rubber grips provide a solid, non-slip hold. The 18-round magazines are a nice bonus for range days or home defense.
How It Compares
| Feature | CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical | Beretta 92FS | Sig Sauer P226 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price Point | ~$726 | ~$650 | ~$1,000+ |
| Action | DA/SA, Decocker | DA/SA, Safety/Decocker | DA/SA, Decocker |
| Frame Material | Steel | Aluminum Alloy | Aluminum Alloy |
| Weight (Unloaded) | ~40 oz | ~34 oz | ~34 oz |
| Mag Capacity | 18+1 | 15+1 (Std) | 15+1 (Std) |
| Ergonomics | Low Bore Axis, Excellent | Good, Larger Grip | Good |
| Aftermarket | Good & Growing | Excellent | Excellent |
The SP-01 Tactical sits in a sweet spot. It’s more substantial and softer-shooting than the Beretta due to its steel frame, and it offers similar core functionality to the Sig P226 at a noticeably lower price. The trade-off is weight; this is not a light pistol.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Extremely Reliable: In our testing and from customer feedback, it runs. We’ve found it functions flawlessly with common 115gr and 124gr FMJ range ammo. The break-in period is fast.
- Superb Value: For around $726, you get an all-steel, hammer-fired duty pistol with a decocker and 18-round mags. It’s hard to match the build quality at this price.
- Excellent Ergonomics & Shootability: The grip angle and checkering are fantastic. The steel frame soaks up recoil, making follow-up shots easy. The low bore axis helps with muzzle flip.
- Proven Design: This is an evolution of the CZ 75, one of the most copied handgun designs in history. It’s not a fad.
- Good Out-of-the-Box Trigger: The single-action pull is crisp, and the double-action, while heavy, is smooth. It’s a good platform for a trigger job if you want one later.
❌ Cons:
- Heavy: At 4.0 oz measured, this is a range, competition, or nightstand gun. It is not suited for everyday concealed carry for most people.
- Slide is Small: The slide sits inside the frame rails, giving it a low profile. Some users, especially those used to Glocks or 1911s, find there’s less to grab onto for racking.
- Ammo Sensitivity Note: While rare, our staff did observe one hiccup with a specific brand of 147gr subsonic ammunition during testing. It eats everything else we’ve fed it.
Best For
Buy if: You want a soft-shooting, reliable full-size 9mm for the range, USPSA Production division, or home defense. You prefer a hammer-fired gun with a decocker over a striker-fired pistol or a manual safety. You appreciate the heft and durability of an all-steel frame.
Skip if: You are looking for a primary concealed carry pistol. Your budget is under $600. You exclusively want a striker-fired polymer pistol. You have difficulty racking slides with less purchase.
Your Questions Answered
Is the CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical reliable?
Yes, overwhelmingly so. Across 24 buyer reviews in our system, it holds a 4.4/5 satisfaction rating, with reliability being the most common praise. In our own function testing, it ran hundreds of rounds of 115gr and 124gr FMJ without issue. It has a very low return rate for malfunctions.
What’s the difference between the SP-01 Tactical and the SP-01?
The key difference is the safety system. The standard SP-01 has a manual safety and is designed for “cocked and locked” carry like a 1911. The SP-01 Tactical has a decocker lever and no manual safety. You use the decocker to safely lower the hammer to a double-action first shot.
Is this good for a first handgun?
It can be, with consideration. Its weight and size make it easy to shoot well and manage recoil, which is great for learning. The decocker is a safe system, but a new shooter must understand and practice the double-action/single-action transition. If you’re only going to the range, it’s excellent. If you want one gun for everything including carry, its weight makes it less ideal.
Can I use it for USPSA competition?
Absolutely. It’s a popular choice in the Production division. The weight helps with recoil control for fast splits, the trigger is good, and the 18-round capacity is more than enough for any Production stage. You’ll see plenty of these on the line in Topeka and Wichita matches.
Where can I buy CZ online?
You can purchase the CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical right here at Texasgunshop. We ship from our Dallas warehouse to your local FFL. The process is straightforward: buy online, we ship, your FFL does the transfer. We’ve been selling this model successfully since spring 2025.
What holster fits the SP-01 Tactical?
You need a holster specifically molded for the SP-01. The rail and full-size frame won’t fit in holsters for the standard CZ 75B. Popular duty-style holsters from companies like Safariland (e.g., 6390 series for the SP-01) work well. For competition, Blade-Tech and Comp-Tac make good options.
Does it come with a case and magazines?
Yes. It comes new from CZ in a plastic hard case with two 18-round magazines, a cable lock, a cleaning rod, and basic manuals.
