U.S. Springfield Model 1840 Musket

This U.S. Springfield Model 1840 musket has been reconverted to its original flintlock configuration. The lock plate carries an 1841 date, and the barrel tang has been re-stamped to match it. The metal shows a gray and brown patina throughout. The stock has been lightly sanded and shows minor bumps and dings, with the faint outline of a cartouche still visible. It is sold as a used antique long gun.

This is a collector's piece rather than a field gun, and the plain description matters: a reconversion means the lock was returned to flint after an earlier change, and the re-stamped tang is part of that work. What you get is a mid-nineteenth-century Springfield with the wear of its age, a readable date on the lock and a stock that has had some attention. It suits a Texas collector of U.S. martial arms, or anyone building a display of American military long guns, and it should be valued on exactly the condition facts listed here.
