Weatherby Mark Xxii Rifle 22LR

Weatherby's Mark XXII is the company's upmarket rimfire, and this Japanese-built example from the 1970s, serial T04076, is the tube-magazine self-loading version in .22 LR. The 24-inch barrel wears a ramped front sight and a dovetailed rear, there is a tang safety, and the bolt is jeweled. Bluing covers the steel, and the walnut stock is cut in the Weatherby manner: skip-line checkering, a rosewood tip on the forend, a grip cap and the factory Weatherby pad still fitted.

Wear is honest for a rifle of its age: marks on the woodwork, one deeper dent in the forend, and scuffing on the bluing, which the supplier otherwise rates as sound, while the bore is excellent. Texas bars rimfire ammunition for deer, so this is not a deer-season gun; it is a rifle for the range, for plinking on a lease, and for anyone who likes Weatherby woodwork in a .22. The long barrel and tube magazine give it a steady, unhurried feel at the shoulder.
